What Is a Nakshatra?

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), a Nakshatra is a lunar mansion — one of 27 equal divisions of the sky, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of arc. The Moon completes its journey through all 27 Nakshatras in approximately 27.3 days. The Nakshatra that the Moon occupied at your exact moment of birth is considered your birth star (Janma Nakshatra) and is one of the most fundamental indicators in your Vedic birth chart.

While Western astrology focuses primarily on the Sun's position, Vedic astrology gives the Moon — and specifically the Nakshatra — primary importance for understanding personality, destiny, and auspicious timing. Each Nakshatra is governed by a specific planet, deity, symbol, and quality (Gana) that reveals the essential spiritual theme your soul is working with in this incarnation.

The 27 Nakshatras

The 27 Nakshatras begin with Ashwini (ruled by Ketu, governed by the Ashwini Kumars, the divine physicians — a Nakshatra of healing and new beginnings) and progress through the sidereal zodiac. Each Nakshatra is further divided into four padas (quarters), each ruled by a navamsa sign, creating 108 divisions in total — a sacred number in Vedic tradition corresponding to the 108 beads of a mala and the 108 Upanishads.

Nakshatra Questions Answered

A Nakshatra is a lunar mansion in Vedic astrology — one of 27 star clusters that the Moon passes through during its monthly journey around the Earth. Your Nakshatra is determined by the position of the Moon at your exact birth time and is considered your fundamental soul signature in Jyotish (Indian astrology).

Western astrology primarily uses the Sun's position (your sun sign). Vedic astrology prioritises the Moon's position, and specifically which Nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. While Western signs are 30-degree segments, each Nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, creating 27 (or 28) finer divisions.

Each Nakshatra carries unique power for different purposes. Rohini is considered auspicious for love and material prosperity. Pushya is considered the most auspicious overall. Swati is powerful for independence. Jyeshtha for authority. The "most powerful" is the one aligned with your specific soul purpose.

Ideally yes — the Moon moves about 13 degrees per day, so on some days it crosses Nakshatra boundaries. Without a birth time, this calculator uses noon as a default and notes if you are near a boundary. For most people, noon gives an accurate result.

Each Nakshatra is governed by a specific deity from the Hindu pantheon — these deities embody the essential spiritual quality and life theme of that Nakshatra. Understanding your ruling deity reveals the spiritual archetype your soul is working with in this lifetime.

Yes — Nakshatra compatibility (called Ashta Koota matching) is the primary method of marriage matching in traditional Vedic astrology. 36 points are analysed across 8 categories, with Nakshatra compatibility forming the foundation of the entire system.
