Vedic Sun Sign FAQs

The key difference is the zodiac system used. Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac fixed to the seasons (0° Aries = spring equinox). Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal zodiac tracking actual star positions. Due to the precession of equinoxes (Earth's axis wobble over 26,000 years), the two zodiacs are currently about 24° apart. This means most people's Vedic Sun sign (Rashi) is one full sign behind their Western Sun sign. For example, a Western Aries (born March 21-April 19) is almost always a Vedic Pisces (Meena).

The Lahiri ayanamsha (also called Chitrapaksha ayanamsha) is the official standard ayanamsha endorsed by the Government of India for all Vedic astrological calculations. The ayanamsha is the angular difference between the Tropical and Sidereal zodiacs at any given date — currently approximately 24.21° in 2026. It increases by about 50.3 arc seconds per year due to precession. The Lahiri ayanamsha places the star Spica (Chitra) at exactly 180° sidereal longitude.

In Vedic astrology, your Rashi (zodiac sign) is traditionally determined by your Moon sign, not your Sun sign. The Moon sign Rashi is the primary indicator of personality in Jyotish. However, your Sun sign (Surya Rashi) is also calculated — it shows your outer expression, dharmic path, and relationship to authority and father. This calculator shows your Vedic SUN sign (Surya Rashi), which is different from what most astrologers call your Rashi (Moon sign). Use our Moon Sign Calculator for your primary Vedic sign.

In Vedic (Jyotish) astrology, the Sun (Surya) represents: the soul (atma), the father and authority figures, government and leadership, self-expression and ego, bones and heart physically, and the conscious dharmic path. The Sun sign shows where and how you are meant to develop authority, shine, and express your soul's conscious intention in this lifetime. It is a more public, outer-directed indicator compared to the Moon's private, inner-directed energy.

The Sun is considered: Exalted (uchcha) in Mesha (Aries) — most powerful at 10° Mesha; In its own sign (svakshetra) in Simha (Leo) — very strong; Debilitated (neecha) in Tula (Libra) — weakest at 10° Tula; Friendly with Moon, Mars, and Jupiter signs; Neutral with Mercury signs; Hostile with Venus and Saturn signs. However, planetary strength in Jyotish is complex — even a debilitated Sun can become powerful through Neechabhanga Raja Yoga (cancellation of debilitation rules).
