Antardasha FAQs
Antardasha (also called Bhukti) is a sub-period within each Mahadasha in the Vimshottari dasha system. Each 6-20 year Mahadasha is divided into 9 Antardashas, each ruled by one of the 9 Jyotish planets in cyclic order starting from the Mahadasha lord. The Antardasha planet adds its energy to the Mahadasha theme — creating distinct sub-chapters within the larger dasha story. For example, during Jupiter Mahadasha, the Saturn Antardasha brings a blend of Jupiterian wisdom and Saturnine discipline.
Each Antardasha duration is calculated as: (Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet years) ÷ 120. For example, in Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years), the Saturn Antardasha lasts (16 × 19) ÷ 120 = 2.53 years (about 2 years 6 months). The shortest possible Antardasha is Ketu within Sun Mahadasha: (6 × 7) ÷ 120 = 0.35 years (about 4.2 months). The longest is Venus within Venus Mahadasha: (20 × 20) ÷ 120 = 3.33 years.
Generally auspicious combinations include Jupiter-Jupiter, Jupiter-Venus, Venus-Jupiter, Moon-Jupiter, Jupiter-Moon, and Mercury-Jupiter. These bring mutual benefit because both planets are natural benefics and/or have friendly relationships. The most challenging combinations typically involve enemies: Sun-Saturn, Saturn-Sun, Moon-Rahu, and similar hostile pairings. However, the actual effects depend entirely on how these planets are placed in your individual birth chart.
The Vimshottari system has three main levels: Mahadasha (major period, 6-20 years), Antardasha (sub-period, weeks to 3 years), and Pratyantar Dasha (sub-sub-period, days to months). For general life prediction and annual forecasting, astrologers primarily use Mahadasha and Antardasha. Pratyantar Dasha is used for precise monthly-level timing. Further subdivisions exist (Sookshma and Prana Dasha) for day-level and hour-level prediction.
The Antardasha planet modifies the Mahadasha theme significantly. Think of the Mahadasha as the season and the Antardasha as the specific weather within that season. A difficult Mahadasha can have pleasant Antardasha sub-periods when benefic planets rule the sub-period. A generally auspicious Mahadasha can have challenging sub-chapters when malefic planets rule the Antardasha. The relationship between the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords (friendly, neutral, or hostile) determines the overall quality of each sub-period.
